Flora
One of the most typical smells of Extremadura is the sweet-herbal odour of the gum cistus. You can find these plants almost everywhere, and by far it is the most characteristic plant of the region, apart from the western holm oak.
The regular ploughing by the farmers favours annual and biannual field and pasture plants, such as tolpis, purple viper's bugloss, andryala, corn marigold, annual daisy and yellow chamomile. Although the number of species may not be that exciting, they make up for it by the sheer number of flowers and vast dehesas are a truly spectacular sight during the spring. You might never have seen such a beautiful scene!
